| Native American Code Talkers in World War 2 is one of the titles in Osprey Publishing's Warriors series. All titles in the series are well-researched and contain full-colour plates of the uniforms or clothing worn by military forces of the past and present. In this title, the author and illustrator focus on the Native American men who enlisted in the United States military and became code talkers. The author, a former Marine, offers a highly readable account of the work performed by Navajo and Comanche code talkers in the Marines and Army during the Second World War. The book explains the training and recruitment of Native American men, appearance and equipment, the various campaigns, the Japanese attempt to break the code, and the aftermath of war on the soldiers. The book contains 55 archival black and white photographs of soldiers and their equipment, as well as 7 colour plates of illustrations. While the author uses the names of known Navajo and Comanche code talkers, he creates fictional characters as well which tends to confuse the reader. Otherwise the details about uniforms and military equipment along with quotes from code talkers add immensely to the understanding of the sacrifices and contributions made by these Native American veterans. |
