The Gathering is a 32-page well-illustrated picture book about a young child learning about a Mikmaw gathering, also known as mawiomi or a spiritual gathering. At the Gathering Alex is introduced to a variety of traditional powwow events such as learning about the sacred fire and fine arts and crafts. Alex and her older cousin participate in beading, watching how baskets and a canoe is made along with listening to the drummers and enjoying a traditional feast. Author Theresa Meuse is a First Nations educator and advisor from the Bear River First Nation and developed this book for Indigenous and non-Indigenous parents, teachers and other educators with a visual tool that makes for a fun and interactive way for children to learn. Alex learns she has a voice of her own when she speaks respectfully during a talking circle. In addition her self-esteem improves as her cousin guides her with the protocols when attending a powwow or special gathering. Colour illustrations by Art Stevens assists readers with carefully detailed images. A minor typo was noted. Ideal for elementary level students. Highly recommended.
