Description

Classic Images of Canada's First Nations, 1850-1920 is a collection of 92 archival photographs of First Nations and Inuit by a variety of Canadian photographers. Collected and organized by Edward Carvell, a former curator at Banff's Whyte Museum, the images range from early daguerreotype to images taken in the 1920s. The images were selected from archives, museums, and private collections. The author writes a brief introduction to this survey collection that provides a synopsis of the process of capturing First Nations portraits and identifying the images using current place names and respectful terminology. Thus this slim book offers students an interesting glimpse into the history of photography as it relates to images of First Nations. Of particular interest are the images of George Henry (Maunguadaus, Mississauga circa 1849); the Gros-Louis family from Loretteville circa 1880; Kahnawake Mohawk group photo during lacrosse game in Montreal 1869; lacrosse team from Kahnawake 1876; Cree Chief Piapot; and Crowfoot. Other Nations represented in this collection are Nakoda, Siksika, Mi'kmaq, Métis, Sto:lo, and Haida. An excellent cross section of historical photographs of First Nations People.
