The Journey Forward: Novellas on Reconciliation, Lucy & Lola and When We Play Our Drums, They Sing! is a unique flip book published by McKellar and Martin publishers. Printed as one book the two novellas address the issues surrounding residential schools, foster care (60s scoop), Truth, Reconciliation and what this means for students from grades five to eight.
Taan's Moons: A Haida Moon Story is a fascinating art-based picture book developed by Alison Gear (poetry) and Kiki van der Heiden and the student artists of Haida Gwaii. During a three month art project involving Kindergarten (some mixed Grade 1/2) classes of all six elementary schools on Haida Gwaii, BC, the author and artist worked together to create this 48-page book about the Bear's Moons. In Haida language taan refers to the bear. The Haida people have a unique way of recording time according to the way the bear follows the seasons or months of the year.
B is for Basketball: An Alphabet Book is an alphabet picture book written by the staff and students of School District 50 Haida Gwaii. The idea for an official book for the 2011 All Native Basketball Tournament was the impetus for the creation of the book. It is meant to celebrate this yearly sports event held in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Basketball has a history among the First Nations in British Columbia. Parents and Elders saw a need for a book about Aboriginal basketball. Each letter of the alphabet has a colour illustration about some aspect of playing and watching basketball.
Nighty-Night: A Bedtime Song for Babies is a gentle rhyming poem for infants preparing for sleep. This board book by Richard Van Camp celebrates babies and their parents or caregivers as the babies are sung to sleep at night. Using colour photographs showing a range of parents and babies from various cultural backgrounds, the publisher, McKellar and Martin, has created a soothingly beautiful night-time book. The author acknowledges the world around the young child as the text and image combine to assist in calming the daily night-time process. Highly recommended.
