Description

Story Basket Two is a primary level reader developed for the Circle Program, an integrated ESL language arts program for Native students at the grade two reading level. The reader contains three illustrated stories. The Hungry Mink incorporates a traditional Cree story told by Victoria Beardy. This story teaches the consequences of being too greedy. Artist Michael Robinson illustrates this story in his distinctive style. Lenore Keeshig-Tobias wrote the story, A Dancer Can Wear One, Too. In this story two friends love to fancy dance with their shawls. One girl wears a hearing aid and her friend tells her dancers at powwows don't wear hearing aids. The girl's mother instills confidence in her handicapped daughter who is able to understand the importance of wearing the hearing aid. The final story called David is a tall tale about a fisherman and his exploits. This collection shows Native people in positive situations and draws on the humour and values of traditional teachings. A Listen and Read book suggested for grade two.
