Description

The Gods of Prophetstown: The Battle of Tippecanoe and the Holy War for the American Frontier is part dual biography and part history by Auburn University history professor Adam Jortner. Written as his thesis, this 310-page volume from Oxford University Press was released in 2011 in time for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe, a little-known battle prior to the War of 1812. The two main characters are the Shawnee leader Tenskwatawa and William Henry Harrison, Indiana governor and a future American President. These two men are key players in the determination of both American history and the history of the Indian Nations in North America. American historians believe that their history is one of divine right whereby the Native Nations are subjugated because they are inherently inferior. The author clearly dismisses this understanding with his thorough documentation. The victory for Harrison is never a given.  Weaving detailed accounts of the political and spiritual landscapes for both leaders, the author has provided a fascinating and engaging history of the time preceding the War of 1812. A detailed index, bibliography, and archival images are included.
