Description

Let's Tell a Story: A Collection of 26 Stories and Songs from Nunavik, with Activities for Young Children is the publication from the Avataq Cultural Institute. This not-for-profit organization is dedicated to protecting and promoting the Indigenous language and culture of Nunavik Inuit. This 136-page spiral bound guide is an excellent teacher's resource for those working with Inuit children in the early childhood education program. As a culture-specific resource the book was designed by a team of Inuit educators, language consultants, and Inuit storytellers and Elders. It contains 26 traditional stories retold for children up to age 5. Each of the stories has new vocabulary explained, a suggested game, song, craft and activity designed for the early childhood education setting. Information boxes throughout the text provide teachers with suggestions for age-appropriate activities as well as background information about some specific aspect of Inuit culture. The resource is well-organized with appealing graphics that include Inuit art sculptures and images, colour-photographs of Inuit children playing the games, and colour illustrations. Although this resource was designed to support an Inuit cultural setting, the guide can easily be adapted for all early childhood education and kindergarten settings. The suggested craft activities use materials found in any Canadian educational setting. The traditional stories are identified according to storyteller and community. This is a quality resource that was created by Inuit educators and Elders and it is highly recommended. This title is also available in separate French and Inuktitut syllabics editions.
