Description

Children of the Longhouse is an excellent historical fiction novel by noted Abenaki author, Joseph Bruchac. Set during the 1490s in Mohawk Nation Territory, Bruchac weaves a story about 11-year-old twins who are brother and sister. Ohkwa'ri and his sister, Otsi:stia, must deal with everyday life in their Mohawk village as well as overcoming the bullying behavior of an older youth and his clique who plan a raid against an Abenaki village. The boy must come to terms with the bully and his plans that could lead to a disastrous raid. Ohkwa'ri is respectful of his grandmother and other village Elders. He understands the teachings embedded within the principles of The Great Law of Peace. So he tells the Elders about the plans of the youths. This action is appreciated but it also means that he has made an enemy of the youth. Life in the village continues but the time for a challenge appears when a healing game of lacrosse (Tekwaarathon) is prescribed for an Elder who is sick. Ohkwa'ri is a good lacrosse player and he must draw on his personal courage and strength to face the bullying youth on the opposing side. Throughout the story, Bruchac includes facts about Mohawk village life including the role of women, the lifestyle of the people, family relationships, the importance of the government of the Iroquois, and the yearly cycle of ceremonies. Twin sister Otsi:stia exhibits the strength of women in Iroquois society as she wisely counsels her brother about his actions. Brother and sister rely on Mohawk legends to guide their behavior during the story. This is a remarkable novel that combines an exciting adventure story with knowledge about the cultural teachings and values of the Five Nations Iroquois. A glossary, pronunciation guide, and list of additional readings can be found at the end of the book. Lexile Measure: 950; ATOS Reading Level: 5.5; Guided Reading Level: S.
