Hide and Sneak is a children's picture book by well known Inuit writer and storyteller Michael Kusugak. In this story, the main character is a young girl named Allashua. She is not very good at playing hide and seek with her friends. She finds too many interesting animals and insects in her environment that draws her attention from the game. One day Allashua meets an Ijiraq, a hide and seek creature that helps children hide so well they are never found. Allashua enjoys the funny little creature's antics and finally goes to hide with the Ijiraq. Allashua finds herself far from her home and wants desperately to return to her family. The Ijiraq refuses to take her home, but when Allashua teases the creature, it consents to take her back to her family. On the way Allashua becomes lost when the Ijiraq suddenly disappears. The only landmark is a tiny dot in the distance. It turns out to be an inuksugaq (inukshuk). Father explains the importance of the inuksugaq and Allashua exclaims that it works. This is a charming story about the Canadian North that features a young heroine. The text and the coloured drawings capture the beauty of the environment found in the Arctic. The adventures of Allashua will delight young children while they learn that the Arctic is not a barren, white landscape. Also available in a hardcover edition.
