Potlatch: A Tsimshian Celebration is a colourful photo-essay about a 13-year-old Tsimshian boy and his father's home community, Metlakatla, Alaska as they participate in a Potlatch. David Boxley spends the summer with his father in the community where his father grew up. A brief history of the Tsimshian of the Northwest Coast explains their geographic location and culture. An important ceremony known as the Potlatch commemorates important events such as the death of a chief and the inheritance of the replacement chief.

The Elders Are Watching, 5th edition, reflects collaboration between poet David Bouchard and artist Roy Henry Vickers. First released in 1990, this combination of poetic art explores the theme of First Nations and their relationship to the environment. Twenty-five evocative, colour images drawn by Vickers are combined with four-line verses written by Bouchard. Together the Tsimshian artist and the British Columbian teacher gently focus the reader's attention to the importance of the environment and the teachings of the elders.

The story is told in the first person by a young Native girl and her father as they spend quality time canoeing on a northern lake. During the canoe trip they encounter several water animals and finally they notice the reclusive loon. The girl's father explains the habits of the loon and retells a Tsimshian story about how the loon received its white necklace.

UNAVAILABLE This title is unavailable from the publisher. The Loon's Necklace first appeared as a children's book in 1977 and won an illustrator's award for Elizabeth Cleaver. With writer William Toye the illustrator collaborated to produce an artistic picture-storybook that retells a Tsimshian story about loon. In the story an old man's failing eyesight is restored by loon. To thank the loon the old man gives his shell necklace that turns into a white feather collar. Cleaver uses collages assembled with torn paper, paper cut-outs and linocuts to visually interpret the story.
