The picture book begins with a brief version of the Navajo creation story. The next section describes the original homeland and language family of the Navajo or Dineh. These Athabaskan-speakers are related to Northern peoples but they live in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. The following sections cover the coming of Europeans, traditional family life, religion and ceremonies, warfare, the Long Walk, resettlement, and the Navajo today. Throughout the text there are watercolour drawings showing various aspects of Navajo cultural history. The 32-page book includes a map, an index, two poems, and various quotes from significant people from Navajo history. The series presents a good introduction to various Native American tribes from a Native American writer's perspective.
