OUT OF PRINT This kit is no longer available from the publisher. Circle Program - Kindergarten Level is a language arts program kit that contains several booklets and audiocassettes designed to integrate music, art, and games with other reading and writing activities. Organized thematically, the series is designed for Native students who speak English as a second language, but is also suitable for students with an interest in the northern environment and traditional Aboriginal legends and art work. The program, developed in the Modern Language Centre of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education with funding from the Ontario Region of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, addresses listening, speaking, reading and writing skill areas. It has a strong visual-to-audio approach, and incorporates the whole word/sight reading method. This Kindergarten Level Kit contains a Teacher's Book complete with lesson plans organized around nine units; puppet and flannelboard patterns; 10 audiocassettes; I set of Teaching Pictures (20) and Picture Cards (76); a set of 9 Pattern Books (10 copies of each title); and a set of 9 Listen and Read Books (3 copies of each title). Pattern Book titles include: All Kinds of Weather, Bandaids, The Box, Emily's Walk, Let's Eat! Let's Go, Sliding, Who's At the Door?, and Yes I Can. Listen and Read Titles include: All Around the Village, Chakapesh Snares the Sun, Come Back Snow, The Magic Chair, Mittens for Tony, Nanabush and Rabbit, The Old Woman Who Sang to a Wigwam, On Our Way, Rosie's Feast. The program content including the stories and illustrations reflect the culture and environment of the Cree and Ojibway of Northern Ontario. However, this reading program reflects an Algonkian culture that can be easily adapted and expanded for use in primary level classrooms throughout Canada and the United States.
