Himalaya: Vanishing Cultures is a new title from Lee and Low Publishers in their Explore Vanishing Cultures Series. Each title in the series examines an Indigenous culture as the people attempt to face the challenges of their changing environment. In this book, the author offers elementary readers an opportunity to see a contemporary Sherpa and Tibetan family. Readers are introduced to a Sherpa girl named Yanghsi who lives in Nepal. We see her family and their day-to-day lives through her eyes. Her mother is preparing a rice drink that she sells in the public market and provides for the monks at the monastery. The girl assists with family chores and they end the day by attending a festival. The stunning colour photographs by the author Jan Reynolds takes the reader into the child's world of her mountain region home.
