How Things Came to Be: Inuit Stories of Creation from Inhabit Media replaces their 2008 release, Qanuq Pinngurnirmata: Inuit Stories of How Things Came to Be. This 2015 release from Inhabit Media is a collection of nine traditional Inuit stories and legends retold in English by Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley and Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley. These creation stories explain the Battle of Night and Day; the Land's Children; the Arrival of Caribou; Sea Ice, Waterfowl, and Kiviuq; Siqiniq and Taqqiq (Sun and Moon); Nuliajuk (the woman who controls the sea animals); Thunder and Lightning; and the One Who is Lashed.  Each story or teaching recalls the times long ago during the power days when humans and animals were not yet set in form or method of communication.  The Inuit stories explain that all life is breath and this breath is used by all living things.  All existence is part of one greater life that is recognized as Sila or Sky.  In Inuit worldview, people who are wise are considered those of the Great Sky.  These stories contain these early teachings of how the world of the far north came to be and as well how all humans and animals are interconnected to the land and all creation.  The book contains outstanding colour illustrations that accompany each story.  These images capture the power and strength of the characters and animal beings in each legend.  This remarkable collection is highly recommended for senior elementary students as well as for high school level students.
