Indigenous Life in Canada: Past, Present, Future; Housing and Infrastructure, paperback ed., is part of a set of 32-page books by Coast2Coast2Coast and published by Beech Street Books. Designed for elementary students from grades 4 to 7 the books offer an introduction to Indigenous life in Canada in the past, present and future. The content consultant for Housing and Infrastructure is Dennis McPherson, band member of Couchiching First Nation and Associate Professor of Indigenous Learning, Lakehead University. Over six chapters housing and infrastructure is discussed as follows: Chapter 1: Indigenous Peoples’ Living Conditions, discusses the comfort of a home: safeness, comfort, heating or cooling power and water and space for everyone in your family yet does not always describe housing for Indigenous peoples. Chapter 2 considers Infrastructure, the structures and systems that supports society. Water, electricity, telecommunications are some of the systems discussed. Chapter 3 describes housing and how it varies across Canada. Topics covered are the housing crisis, funding, reserves and government involvement. Chapter 4, Housing and Infrastructure Connections, describes transport and health care for example, which is part of infrastructure and other topics such as shortages of homes, urban housing, and homelessness. This chapter also discusses mis-connections through an example in Jordan’s Principle. Chapter 5 focuses on Government Initiatives and strategies for housing. Chapter 6, Helping Hands, looks to the future and non-government organizations and associations assisting with shelter and the associated infrastructure. The book contains simply written text illustrated with maps, charts, images and photos. Each book has brief sidebars of additional information about a topic as well as suggested framing questions to assist students in critical thinking. Includes an index, information about the author, additional resources and a glossary. Levelled Guided Reading: V. Recommended.
