OUT OF PRINT The Inuit by Raymond Bial is part of the Lifeways series published by Benchmark Books. This title discusses the culture and history of the Inuit (Eskimo) of Canadian Arctic, Russia, Alaska, and Greenland. These Arctic and Subarctic people were once known as Eskimo. The author points out that today, the people prefer to be called Inuit. The first chapter includes a version of the Inuit creation story as well as the standard anthropological theory about Inuit origins. Scattered across a severe environment, the Inuit have adapted to this harsh environment and created a culture that extends from Siberia, across the Canadian North, and Greenland (Alaska Inuit, Yuik of Siberia, Central Inuit of Canada, and Greenland Inuit). Chapter two describes Inuit communities that traditionally were small and isolated villages. This chapter also describes the variety of dwellings the Inuit constructed such as the snow igloo, and earth dwelling or karmat. Chapter three discusses the Inuit cultural lifestyle including the cycle of life, roles of men and women, hunting and fishing, food and food preparation, clothing, handicrafts, the arts, and games. The author includes a recipe for seafood chowder that has been adapted for modern kitchens. Chapter four covers Inuit traditional beliefs and spirituality including healing, rituals, and the importance of storytelling. A traditional legend, the girl who married the little man, is retold. The next chapter discusses the impact of European contact with the Inuit traditional culture including disease, the fur trade, and exploration. The last chapter describes the variety of ways today's Inuit in Alaska and Canada have pushed for self-government and more control over their way of life. Each title in the Lifeways series includes a time line, notable people, a glossary, web sites, suggestions for further reading, and an index. In the notable people section the author includes the contributions of several Inuit men and women including: William L. Hensley, Kenojuak, and Howard Rock. The Inuit language is discussed and the author explains that several Inuit words have become part of the English language including terms such as parka, igloo, kayak, husky, and malamute. Throughout the text the author has added numerous colour and archival photographs that greatly enhance the value of this resource designed for students in grade 6 to high school.
