Inuit Spirit: A Colouring Book by Inuk artist Germaine Arnaktauyok features dozens of line drawings, followed by information on Germaine's own artistic process and her unique drawing style inspired by pointillism. Perfect for art lovers and avid colouring fans alike. Germaine Arnaktauyok is an Inuk artist and illustrator, best known for her prints and etchings depicting Inuit traditional stories and traditional ways of life. In 1999, she designed the special edition two-dollar coin commemorating the founding of the territory of Nunavut.  Born in Igloolik in 1946, Germaine is renowned for her talents as an illustrator and master printmaker. She sold her first painting at the age of 11. She went to school in Chesterfield Inlet before attending the University of Manitoba and commercial art courses at Algonquin College in Ottawa between 1966 and 1968. She has also been commissioned by the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs as an illustrator for various Inuit publications. Her father Isidore Iytok, and mother Therese Natsiq Tulugatjuk are carvers. Germaine developed a drawing technique that she calls “squiggles,” drawings made up of fine, coiled lines. The resulting texture can sometimes make a drawing look like an engraving. This 48-page colouring book does not follow the look of a child's colouring book. The artist reflects on the landscape and living environment of the Arctic by sketching images of animals, sea mammals, birds, fish, the seasons, hunting tools, Inuit men and women's clothing styles, tundra plants, and traditional stories. Each detailed drawing is accompanied by an artist's statement about the significance of the content to the artist. This book is suited for the grade 9 Indigenous Studies course about the arts. Highly recommended.
