Kappianaqtut: Strange Creatures and Fantastic Beings from Inuit Myths and Legends, volume 1 is a publication from Inhabit Media, an Inuit-owned company that promotes and preserves the stories, knowledge and voices of Northern Canada. This collection is written in English. Kappianaqtut means that which is frightening in Inuktitut. The two stories, The Mother of the Sea Beasts (Sedna) and The Giants of the North are derived from historical transcriptions, such as those of Knud Rasmussen and Franz Boas, and combined with the knowledge of contemporary Inuit Elders and storytellers, including Marianne Taparti, Mark Kalluak, and George Kappianaq. This illustrated account introduces readers to the rich oral tradition of the Inuit and how storytellers over time and distance tell similar accounts of these major events in Inuit cultural history. This second edition does not have the Inuktitut syllabics that the first edition featured.
