UNAVAILABLE This title is no longer available from the publisher. Living in an Igloo is a 16-page book developed by Bebop Books for young readers. It features a reading recovery level of 12, and a word count of 181. In this picture book, a young girl named Daisy, whose real name is Kenalogak, introduces young readers to her life in Canada's far north. This Inuit child points out her family's modern house and her friends playing road hockey. But she also leads the reader through the process of building an igloo made from snow blocks. The whole family is involved but her younger sister just watches from the safety of her mother's back. The girl's father demonstrates the steps in making a dome-shaped igloo. Inside the igloo her mother makes the family's warm clothing from caribou hides. Daisy goes outside to play in the snow and practices making her own play igloo. She states that living in an igloo is fun and invites the reader to think about living in one too. This book features actual colour photographs of the Inuit family making their igloo. In this way the reader is told a lot about what it is like to be Inuit living in the Arctic. A small map is provided as well as a pronunciation guide for the girl's traditional name. This is an excellent child-centred book for beginning preschool and kindergarten readers; it will also appeal to the multicultural and Native classroom.
