In The Owl and the Lemming, Owl swoops down and blocks the entrance to a lemming den, he is sure that he has a tasty meal in the little animal he has cornered. But this lemming is not about to be eaten. This smart little rodent will need to appeal to the boastful owl's sense of pride to get away. In this 2016 picture book from Inuit Media, this delightful 32-page book captures the essence of this traditional story's message about not playing with your food as well as avoiding prideful boasting. Set on the Arctic tundra we meet two young inhabitants. A young lemming searching for the lovely new moss growing around her family burrow, and a young owl also out hunting for food while soaring across the sky. Suddenly a shadow passes over the lemming but the little creature continues her search for the tender moss. As this little lemming continues her search she forgets her caution and is confronted by a huge owl blocking her home. Lemming thinks quickly of ways to avoid her demise. She proposes a game by appealing to the inexperienced hunter's pride. Lemming is able to outwit the young bird and quickly escapes to the safety of her little underground home. Owl returns home very hungry and tells his father about the lost lemming lunch. Father explains the young bird's errors and the young bird learns a valuable lesson. The storyteller is Inuk filmmaker Roselyn Akulukjuk who directed a puppet-based film of the story for Taqqut Productions, just winning Best Animation at the 41st annual American Indian Film Institute Festival. Accompanied by the art of Amanda Sandland who combines her cartoon-like characters of lemming and owl with the realistic landscape of moss and rocks found in the Arctic landscape these images create a humourous story young children will find engaging. Highly recommended. The Owl and the Lemming has been selected in the Children’s Category Longlist for First Nation Communities READ 2018
