Description

Story Circle One: The Battle of the Four Winds and Other Stories is a primary level reader developed for the Circle Program, an integrated ESL language arts program for Native students. The text contains four stories with illustrations by First Nations artists. The stories are adapted specifically for First Nations students. The stories include imaginative tales about a young girl in the future, another about a contemporary Ojibwe boy who finds adventure with Aboriginal people from the past, a traditional Cree story about the Four Winds, and finally a modern story about a Native family on Christmas Eve. In the story, Jake and Yokum, a magical day in the woods turns into a journey set in an Anishinabek village from long ago. Jake and his dog participate in a caribou hunt in this fantasy tale. Michael Robinson's artwork illustrates this story. The Woodland style painting of Saul Williams enhances Carl Ray's traditional Cree legend about the Battle between the Four Winds. In the final story, a contemporary Native extended family finds that the best Christmas of all means having all the family members together. This collection shows Native people in positive situations and draws on the humour and values of traditional teachings. A Listen and Read book suggested for grade 3 ESL students.
