Description

Story Circle Three: A Gift from Nokomis and Other Stories is a grade three reader developed for the Circle Program, an integrated ESL language arts program for Native students. The text contains four stories with illustrations by First Nations artists. The traditional stories are adapted from original texts and rewritten specifically for First Nations students. The stories include A Gift from Nokomis (origin of maple sugar), Nanabush and the Rude Eagle, How Chickadees Came To Be, and The Ballad of Willy Dale. The trickster and teacher, Nanabush, is a legendary Ojibwe character who teaches Eagle a lesson about manners. This traditional story is adapted from the text collected by David and Emerson Coatsworth. Noted artist Michael Robinson illustrates this story. Cree artist Carl Ray contributes the story about chickadee. These are excellent teaching stories that primary level students of all cultural backgrounds will enjoy. This Listen and Read text is suggested for grade 3 ESL students.
