Description

Richard Cardinal: Cry from a Diary of a Metis Child is a documentary examination of the child welfare system in Canada. At 17, this Metis youth committed suicide after moving 28 times from foster home to group home since he was apprehended at age four. This articulate youth and his chronic abuse at the hands of caregivers and a system that failed him are given voice by this Alanis Obomsawin film. Through Richard Cardinal's diary and interviews with family, friends and teachers the viewer begins to see the trauma this youth faced. The shocking details of his life are presented in a manner that will emotionally touch viewers. As a result of Cardinal's death, an inquiry was launched into the child welfare system of Alberta.
