Dragon Castle is the 2011 release by prolific Abenaki storyteller and author Joseph Bruchac. In this young adult novel Bruchac turns to his Slovakian ancestry for inspiration for his latest fantasy historical fiction story. Combining humour and fairy-tale elements along with trademark action-filled adventure and elements of traditional stories Bruchac creates engaging characters in this early Middle Ages epic. There are two brothers dealing with the absence of their naive parents, the king and queen, and trying to save their beloved castle of uninvited guests, a horde of military types. Readers can predict that the brothers will overcome with the help of an elderly family retainer and their teacher of swordsmanship in defeating the Baron Temny. This cast of interesting characters will capture the attention of all readers especially boys. Bruchac employs the alternating chapter technique to tell this story with the first chapter introducing the historical ancestor Pavol, the hero who fought a dragon and defeated the Dark Lord, and the next chapter telling 15-year-old Rashko's story. At the mid-point of the novel the characters from the past and present converge. This is a great novel that features sword-play, a dragon, a Dark Lord, an evil baron and his daughter, telepathic wolves all set in a mysterious castle. Highly Recommended.
