Description

James Simon Mishibinijima, from Wikwemikong in the northeast of Manitoulin Island, explores the legends of the Ojibwe through this and the waterways of this island, the shores of Birch Island, the La Cloche mountains and the northern edges of Lake Huron. Manitoulin Island, according to legend, is home to spiritual portals that allow access to the spirit world of prayers that are offered up to those who have come before and who have passed. Conversely, they also allow spirits to return to the human realm and initiate contact themselves. At the heart of ‘Pictographs’ lies Mishibinijima’s conviction that the images on rock faces across the Canadian Shield and incised on sacred birth bark scrolls of the Grand Medicine Society, are repositories of the religion, ethics and history of the Anishinabek people. In this book, art reflects Mishibinijima’s lifelong search for ways in which past and present, the spiritual and human, the animate and inanimate can and do, co-mingle in phenomena both seen and unseen. This work is a 2018 e-Lit Awards Winner.
