Description

Thunderbird Spirit is part of the Orca Sports series and is targeted for reluctant readers who require high interest and low vocabulary books. This hockey oriented title contains an exciting sports context as well as racism, mystery and friendship themes. The two main characters are teen boys who play hockey for a Seattle team. The one character named Mike is a reckless and often quick to anger youth who has just been traded to this Seattle team and is starting to wear out his welcome. His past has followed him and his coach is watching him carefully because of the problems with his previous teams. The other character is Dakota who is a Cree youth with a calm manner who is the target of racist fans. They make an unlikely pair and it takes time for them to develop a friendship. While the main plot is focused on the hockey aspect, the author adds a subplot toward the end of the book that seems misplaced. This terrorist bombing plot adds a distracting part to the novel because is seems an unlikely add on. Nevertheless the story remains an exciting hockey novel that will engage reluctant male readers who want compelling sports reading. This Orca title has a designated as Fry Reading Level: 4.0. This book is selected as a recommended title in the 2009 First Nations Libraries Community Reads program.
