Putuguq and Kublu and the Qalupalik! is the second installment in Inhabit Media’s Putuguq and Kublu series for emergent readers. This humour-filled story is both informational as well as a beginning reader for students told in a colourful graphic novel style. Brother and older sister, Putuguq and Kublu, must decide to heed their grandfather’s scary story warning the pair to be cautious while exploring the Arctic shoreline or is grandfather just making up this tale. Grandfather tells them about the qalupalik, the child-snatching sea creature with long fingernails, slimy skin, and locks of hair dripping down its back. Storytellers Roselynn Akulukjuk and Danny Christopher collaborate with illustrator Astrid Arijanto creating this imaginative graphic novel set in a contemporary Inuit village. A map of this village is shown on the book’s endpapers inviting emergent readers to explore further. Ideal for kindergarten to grade 3. Highly recommended.
