Spirit Bear : pêcher le savoir, attraper des rêves / Spirit Bear: Fishing for Knowledge, Catching Dreams, written by Cindy Blackstock and illustrated by Amanda Strong, is based on the story of Shannen Koostachin and her dream for safe and comfy schools for every First Nations student in Canada.
Indigenous Life in Canada: Past, Present, Future, Residential Schools is part of a set of 32-page books produced by Red Line Editorial for Beech Street Books and edited by Marie Pearson. Designed for elementary students from grades 4 to 7 the books offer introductions to the history of Indigenous Peoples in the story of Canada. Residential School by Heather Hudak has six chapters. Chapter one defines residential schools by discussing culture, false stereotypes, missionaries and government action.
Dreamfast, A Trail of Stories to Lead You Home, by Elizabeth Doxtater is a call to Action #95 to create a time for the children and (now) adults who were taken away from communities as children to be welcomed home, so they know they were missed and know that when they return home, they will be loved and protected. Dreamfast is a collection of short stories - a dreamfast-repatriation strategy – to say welcome home. Each story and the accompanying images is part of a connecting land bridge for those children (now) adults who seek to come home.
The Train is written by Jodie Callaghan, a Mi’gmaq woman from Listuguj First Nation in Gespegewa’gi near Quebec. The Train is illustrated by Georgia Lesley. This is story of a young girl, Ashley who is slowly walking back from school when she meets her Uncle. He is sad. He tells Ashley his story of first going to residential school and the important lesson of knowing where you come from. This story is colourfully illustrated yet invokes the sadness that Ashley and her Uncle feel. It is also descriptive with a short glossary of Mig’maq words.
Phyllis’s Orange Shirt is written by Phyllis Webstad who is Northern Secwépemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, and illustrated by Brock Nicol. This book is an adaptation of Phyllis’s The Orange Shirt Story. Phyllis’s Orange Shirt is suitable for 4 to 6 year-olds and while based on the original story, this version has been simplified, shortened, has a rhyming scheme and gentler images. This is Phyllis’s story of living on the Dog Creek Reserve picking berries, gardening and fishing. One day she goes to town and picks out an orange shirt, which becomes her favourite.
Legacy: Trauma, Story and Indigenous Healing by Suzanne Methot, Nehiyaw writer, editor, educator and community worker comprises ten chapters. This book opens with a chapter on How things work and Why Stories Matter, citing reports on psychological and emotional abuse in Indigenous communities and the impact of intergenerational trauma, delegitimizing the notion that current challenges within Indigenous communities are the result of inherent deficiencies in Indigenous peoples and cultures.
Gaawin Gindaaswin Ndaawsii / I Am Not A Number is the first children's picture book by Ojibwe educator Jenny Kay Dupuis from Nipissing First Nation in Ontario. This book has been translated into Nishnaabemwin (Ojibwe), Nbisiing dialect by Muriel Sawyer and Geraldine McLeod and contributions by Tory Fisher. Dupuis retells the story of her grandmother Irene Couchie Dupuis taken to residential school at the age of eight in 1928.
kimotinâniwiw itwêwina / Stolen Words by author Melanie Florence, illustrator Gabrielle Grimard and translated into Cree by Dolores Sand and Gayle Weenie is a primary level picture book that explains language loss among First Nations residential school survivors and their descendants. Told through the eyes of a child and her grandfather, the book captures the close and caring relationship between generations as the girl learns about residential schools and language loss.
Little Butterfly Girl: An Indian Residential School Story is the French version of this picture book produced by the Union of Ontario Indians based on an original account by Jenny Restoule-Mallozzi. With original colour illustrations by Donald Chretien, this story recounts the experiences of an Ojibwe child forced to attend residential school. The tragic account is brought full-circle when Mary begins her healing journey with encouragement from her family.
Author Richard Wagamese is named the 2013 Burt Award recipient for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature for his YA novel, Indian Horse. This edition is in French.
