Description
Ma Kokum a Téléphoné Aujourd'hui is the French language edition of Pemmican Publications' My Kokum Called Today. This French edition was translated by Mona Buors. My Kokum Called Today is a wonderful story about a twelve-year old Cree girl as she plans to visit her Kokum (grandmother). This picture book explains the girl's anticipation through simple text and sensitive pastel-coloured drawings. The girl and her mother live in the city and her grandmother lives on the reserve. These different geographic locations are captured through the illustrations. Grandmother invites her daughter and granddaughter to a round dance and this invitation recalls previous visits to powwows. The love between Kokum and her granddaughter is evident. The granddaughter recalls the importance of Elders especially her Kokum. The experiences of previous visits to the family and friends on the reserve are remembered. The story stresses the significance of women in First Nations communities who maintain the cultural ties with family who live on the reserve and in urban centres. Readers are introduced to the special experience of a young Cree girl planning to go home for a visit.
