Description
Bawaajimo, A Dialect of Dreams in Anishinaabe Language and Literature by Margaret Noodin, discusses Anishinaabe language and literature through the works of four writers representing a range of contemporary Anishinaabe literature: Louise Erdrich, Jim Northrup, Basil Johnston and Gerald Vizenor, who share a world view, a common cultural, linguistic and literary heritage. Their works reflect patterns of identity, conscious survival, universal life and stirred thoughts respectively. From the first page, N’digo: Preface, Margaret Noodin translates the starting point introducing the audience to Anishinaabemowin, a language that is vast across time. In this preface those from before would hear her give thanks to those around her, elders, students, rocks and trees who balance and inspire her; that bits of spirits should be shared before asking others to listen. This work suggests another way of thinking of stories and considering Anishinaabe context first for a less colonial interpretation of centuries' old stories. There is a short description of the language, an overview of Anishinaabe literature and storytelling culture, a round dance of Indigenous inquiry, and then the analysis of the four authors' work.
