Description

The Just Right Gift: A Story of Love is a simply illustrated 24-page book from the Highwater Press series, The Seven Teaching Stories. Migizi loves his Gookom. And he wants to find the best gift for his grandmother or Gookom who is currently in hospital. He knows Gookom's gift has to be perfect, and it has to be as sweet as her kisses. So he thinks of all the options: maybe he can pick some roses he saw in the park; maybe he could buy her a pair of earrings at the store; maybe he could cook her favourite roast dinner; or maybe he could paint her a picture. Migizi finds out he can't pick roses from the park, and he doesn't have any money to buy the earrings, and he only has crayons so he can't paint the best picture. Can he find the perfect gift to show Gookom how much he loves her? Just in time, the boy remembers what his Gookom loves the most. And so when he sees her at the hospital he gives her the biggest hug ever. Now Gookom is happy and so is Migizi. The Seven Teachings of the Anishinaabe: love, wisdom, humility, courage, respect, honesty, and truth, are revealed in seven stories for children. Set in urban landscapes, Indigenous children tell familiar stories about home, school, and community. Series author Katherena Vermette is a Métis writer of poetry, fiction, and children's literature. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia. Illustrator Irene Kuziw is a graduate of the University of Manitoba School of Art. In keeping with the simple stories, the artist's works capture the essential nature of the story making this little picture book reader ideal for beginning readers.
