Description
Ohpikiihaakan-ohpihmeh Raised Somewhere Else: A 60s Scoop Adoptee's Story Of Coming Home is authored by Colleen Cardinal, Nehiyaw Iskwew from Onihcikiskowapowin Saddle Lake First Nation Alberta, daughter of a residential school survivor, 60s scoop adoptee and MMIWG family member and social justice activist organizer. She is co-founder of the National Indigenous Survivors of Child Welfare Network and has successfully organized two national Indigenous Adoptee Gatherings in 2014 and 2015. Her personal narrative is a moving and profound account of her life and subsequent trauma after she was removed from her family and community and placed into a brutal non-Indigenous family. Her life was forever changed but she writes with clarity telling her personal truth as a 60s scoop survivor. Her journey through abuse and healing is told with honesty as she seeks to support other adults who experienced forced adoption. Raven Sinclair, Cree/Assinniboine/Saulteaux from Gordon’s First Nation, offers an introduction. Each chapter is introduced with a Cree term or phrase providing insight into the chapter contents. Highly recommended.
