Ava and the Little Folk is 42-page read-aloud, picture book from Inhabit Media. This captivating story describes the life of a young orphan in an Inuit village. Ava often finds he is hungry and alone, spending time in his special place away from the village. No one wants to show him how to hunt or fish but one day he hears the approaching footsteps of tiny hunters. To his amazement Ava sees the tiny men, with their tiny spears, and tiny hunting dogs. Ava realizes these are in fact Little People or Inugarulligaarjuit. A tiny hunter speaks to Ava and invites him to hunt with the men. Ava is excited to be asked by these little people. Along the way, the little people teach Ava that he has the strength of character and courage to be any size he chooses. Ava surprises the tiny hunters and himself when he kills the fierce polar bear. To Ava the bear really looked like a lemming, but to the little people it was a polar bear. The village of little people accepts Ava and shows him acceptance and love. They build Ava a special iglu because he is too large to enter the little people’s homes. Eventually Ava finds he is part of this village of little folk and can fit into the tiny homes just fine. Ava has found his place in the society of little people. This charming and heart-warming story is illustrated by Jonathan Wright’s dreamy watercolour drawings that capture the emotion of the story as well as the landscape of the Arctic.
