Description

Cathy Modeste-Short is Dene from Délįné on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories. She worked as a School Community Counsellor in Délįné for nine years and was an Education Assistant at Mildred Hall School in Yellowknife for 17 years before she retired. Since her childhood, she has been involved in gathering and preparing plants for natural remedies. She watched her mom prepare natural remedies and help the people of her community of Délįné many times. That's who Cathy learned from; her mother was her teacher. Gathering and preparing traditional remedies is still one of her favourite interests and she enjoys sharing her knowledge.

Step into the world of Dene traditions and natural remedies with the Dechı̨ta Náıdı́: Medicine from the Land - Activity and Colouring Book. Created as a companion to Cathy Modeste-Short’s story, this activity booklet invites children to colour, learn, and connect with the ancestral knowledge of bush medicine. Each page brings Tom Short’s illustrations to life through engaging activities that teach young readers about the plants and practices used by Dene people for generations.

Designed by Yellowknife illustrator Rachel MacNeill, this booklet is more than an activity book – it’s a tool for exploration, crafted to inspire curiosity and respect for nature’s gifts. Perfect for children and families interested in learning about the land and its many offerings, this book provides an accessible way to engage with traditional knowledge while celebrating the beauty of Dene culture.
