The Collected Speeches of Sagoyewatha, or Red Jacket is the recent publication from the Syracuse University Press. Red Jacket (c.1758-1830) was a noted Seneca orator and diplomat. More than fifty speeches are presented in this reference text. Some of the speeches are from unpublished sources while others are revised texts. The editor provides his technique for editing and verification. Some of the most famous of Red Jacket's oratory are included. The events of note are Treaty of Canandaigua (1794); Removal of Joseph Brant (1805); To the Grand River Indians Urging Neutrality (1812); On Separate Races and Religions (1822); and Request for a Teacher from the New York Quakers (1829). Red Jacket made presentations to several United States presidents including Washington and Andrew Jackson, as well as to governors, military leaders, and councils. The book includes detailed notes about the historical context for each speech. It includes a bibliography, detailed index, and maps. This is an important resource for Haudenosaunee (Six Nations Iroquois) history and treaties.
