Description

Indian Stereotypes in TV Science Fiction: First Nations' Voices Speak Out is a unique research study undertaken by a Native American scholar to document First Nations' responses to viewing representative "Indian" stereotypes portrayed in the television science fiction genre. Specific survey groups viewed a select number of TV episodes of My Favorite Martian, Star Trek, Star Trek: Voyager, Quantum Leap, The Adventures of Superman, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Of particular interest is the portrayal of Native religion and spirituality as depicted in these episodes. In one survey, the author looked at the responses of ten Shoshone viewers. They viewed the Quantum Leap episode, Freedom, originally aired in February of 1990. Their comments were also combined with perspectives of non-Shoshone viewers. This report makes interesting readers especially for fans of science fiction.
