Description

This photography book features 80 black and white plates of Columbia River Plateau Native Americans taken by amateur photographer and Indian Agent, Lee Moorhouse. The images are identified by the photographer with the names of the people as well as their tribal affiliation. The essays included in this book explain the life and times of Lee Moorhouse and how many of the portraits feature the same clothing and props. Moorhouse was an avid collector of Native American artifacts for his personal cabinet of curiosities. His images feature the stereotypical perspective of the day but they are significant because the portraits are identified. These images are useful to Native American researchers of the region. The images show portraits, scenic views, Native students attending boarding school, church congregations, sporting events, and rodeo and parade scenes. The Nations represented include the Nez Perce, Wishram, Yakama, Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Umatilla. The book includes a portrait of Nez Perce leader, Chief Joseph.
