Description

Indigenous Communities in Canada: Mi’kmaq Community is an elementary level information book from Beech Street Books about the past and present-day culture and history of the Mi’kmaq who live in Canada’s Atlantic provinces and Quebec and call themselves L’nuk meaning “the people”. L’nuk are discussed through their daily life from 1500s through the fur trade and treaties. Buildings and dwellings focus on traditional and contemporary structures such as wigwams as homes and sweat lodges for religious ceremonies. Art and religion is connected to the natural world and is shown through Mi’kmaq painting, music and storytelling and comprises the chapter on materials, tools and technology. Beliefs and traditions discuss the traditional Grand Council and elected Councils in old ways and new times. The text uses colour images and content that introduces primary and junior level students to the Mi’kmaq and their Confederacy. The Mi’kmaq territory is shown on a map, there is a table of contents, inquiry questions, a glossary, information on learning more with websites and an index. The content consultant is George Paul, member of the Mi’kmaq First Nations and Communications Officer for Eskasoni Band Communications. Guided reading level: Q. Recommended.
