Description

The Promise to the Nokomis: The Transfer of the Anishinaabe Kwe Dance to the Next Generation written by Karen Pheasant, well-known Jingle Dress Dancer and choreographer. This 20-page illustrated book explains the history of the transfer of the Jingle Dress story to First Nations dancers and singers of the powwow tradition. The author is careful to explain this is her understanding of the events that occurred in the 1980s and the part she played in events. It is not a book about the dress and its origins. Karen Pheasant intends the book as a resource tool for powwow participants and others interested in the oral tradition and this important women's dance that is now considered one of the powwow's many dance styles. Illustrations are provided by Mary Pheasant. The book is clearly arranged in sections that explain in chronological order how the dance was transferred to other First Nations by several Lake of the Woods Jingle Dress Nokomis.
