Description
Apologies to the Iroquois by Edmund Wilson was first published in 1970. This edition issued by Syracuse University Press contains a new introduction by anthropologist William Fenton. It includes the original New York essay, The Mohawks in High Steel, by columnist Joseph Mitchell, and the text of Wilson's Apologies. Edmund Wilson wrote Apologies after he mistakenly told a British reporter that Mohicans were in fact Mohawks. So he decided to see for himself and set out to visit several Six Nations Iroquois communities, including St. Regis, Onondaga, Seneca Nation, Tuscarora, and the Six Nations of the Grand River. This volume includes a chapter about each of these communities. Additional chapters include Growth and Causes of Iroquois Resurgence; the Little Water Ceremony, and Seneca New Year's Ceremonies. He discusses important issues of the times such as the Kinzua Dam, the St. Lawrence Seaway, Niagara Power Authority, and the work of Robert Moses, as well as land issues.
