Description

Inuit Shamanism and Christianity: Transitions and Transformations in the Twentieth Century co-written by anthropologists Frederic Laugrand and Jarich Oosten studies the resilience of Inuit cosmology with a focus on shamanism and its transformation after the adoption of Christianity. Using both archival material and oral testimony collected during workshops in Nunavut between 1996 and 2008, the authors are convinced Inuit spirituality did not decline following contact. The book defines the influence of Anglican, Catholic, and, more recently, Pentecostal and Evangelical movements and identifies the ways in which Shamanism continues to influence Inuit communities. The book contains maps, archival photographs, and an index.
