Description

Lesson for the Wolf is the 2015 picture book from Inhabit Media and authored by the respected storytellers Rachel and Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley. In this book, young readers are introduced to some of the animals found in Arctic region through the eyes of an unhappy wolf. This particular wolf is unsatisfied with this appearance and skills. In all the other animals and birds he finds characteristics he admires. He no longer spends time with his wolf brothers and sisters hunting and playing. Instead this wolf watches the owls, wolverines, and caribou with envy, wishing that he could be like them. So one day the power of the earth grants wolf his wish. Wolf now has owl feathers on his back but he cannot fly, antlers on his head, and a bushy wolverine tail. But still these body parts did not make wolf happy. Wolf sat and cried all by himself. He had wanted so badly to be a part of the remarkable earth's creatures. Unfortunately wolf could no longer hunt, and wolf food no longer nourished his strange body. Even his wolf brothers and sisters felt sorry for wolf. Mother of wolves came to this sad, lonely wolf and after hearing his tale Mother wolf brought together all the wolves. She explained that wolves have special ways of acknowledging the beauty in the world. And all the wolves began to sing their love for all creation. The strength of the land was so moved by their songs it undid all the changes to poor lonely wolf. He was now himself and he was healing. He now knew that he did have a way to sing his thanks to the beauty and power of the land. He knew he was a wolf and there was beauty in his pack. Whimsical colour drawings enhance this magical story about a wolf who is happy with the earth and himself. Highly recommended.
