Lee Maracle
Lee Maracle of Stó:lō Nation (1950-2021) is a mother and grandmother, born to a Métis mother and Salish father. She is the granddaughter of Tsleil-Waututh chief Dan George. Lee Maracle was an award-winning performance storyteller, novelist, poet, scriptwriter, actor and activist. She was a prolific writer and published her work in the early 1970s and was one of the first First Nations writers to do so alongside Maria Campbell. Lee Maracle founded the En'owkin International School of Writing in Penticton, B.C. She also taught Indigenous literature courses and storytelling at Canadian universities. As a public speaker Lee Maracle spoke out about colonialism, poverty, and racism. She was named to the Order of Canada in 2018 "For her contributions to Canada's literary landscape and for her influential voice in cultural relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada".
