Description

Uumajut, Volume 2 (French): Étudions Les Animaux De L'Arctique is the primary non-fiction title in Inhabit Media's bilingual (French and Inuktitut) language collection. The book published by Inhabit Media in partnership with Qikiqtani Inuit Association and the Nunavut Bilingual Education Society is written by Nunavut residents Simon Awa and Seeglook Akeeagok, along with Anna Ziegler and Stephanie McDonald. This 32-page book has detailed colour illustrations of Animals of the Tundra (Siksik, Muskox, Ermine, and Wolf), and Animals of the Sea and Ice (Eider Duck, Ringed Seal, Harp Seal, Walrus, Narwhal, and Polar Bear). The Arctic has unique environmental features and in turn the wildlife of the sea and tundra each display their own distinct behaviors and habitats. For example the ground squirrel or siksik lives in family groups in underground tunnels located on the mainland. The narwhal is a medium-sized whale with a unique spiraled tusk that grows from their upper left jaw. The book has text in Inuktitut syllabics translated by Leah Otak at the top of the page, and French text below translated by Donna Christopher. On the opposite page is an illustration of the animal in its habitat. The colour illustrations are by Romi Caron. This Uumajut series is also available in dual a language edition, Inuktitut and English. An excellent information book for French language learners.
