Description

Written by Kelly Crawford and Marci Becking.

“This is my Treaty” is a book that shares the foundational elements of treaty relationships for ages 3-6. Learning about the treaty relationship can begin at an incredibly early age.
Written by treaty educator Kelly Crawford of M’Chigeeng First Nation and Anishinabek Nation Communications Director Marci Becking, this book aims to engage learners with treaty concepts that are related to concepts in their curriculum such as sharing and the meaning of promises.

Photography by Sara Cornthwaite of Nipissing First Nation and Charles Fiabo. The photos were specifically selected to encourage students to understand that we all have responsibilities in the treaty relationship.

Educators can use the book as a platform to discuss concepts of treaties. This book can be used in early childhood education, kindergarten, and grade one in addition to a variety of learning environments. Students at this age can clearly make connections to these concepts as they are fundamental to their learning at this age. The book is available in English, Anishinaabemowin and French. There are several sight words used and a focus on repetition to reinforce student learning.

The book also contains educator supports to encourage discussion and connections to the treaties. What is a promise and what does responsibility look like? The word “promise” in the Ontario curriculum is age appropriate, relatable and creates inclusive environments of understanding for all students.
