Description

Treaty No# 9: Making the Agreement to Share the Land in Far Northern Ontario in 1905 is an analysis of the historical context for the Treaty signed between the Crown and the leaders of the northern Ontario First Nations. The treaty's negotiations, signing, the treaty commissioners, and the leaders are discussed in this 600-page volume. It includes appendices that include Terminology, Historiography, and An Inventory of the 1905 Photographs. Sections of the book cover the parties to the Treaty 9 including Lac Seul (Obishikokaang); Osnaburgh (Mishkeegogamang); Fort Hope (Eabametoong); Marten Falls; English River; Fort Albany; Moose Factory; New Post; and Abitibi. The lost journal of treaty commissioner D. George MacMartin is accessed and provides key details about the terms and negotiations during the signing of Treaty 9. Long uncovers crucial information that demonstrates that not all treaty terms were clearly translated before the signing. He also questions whether the leaders signing the treaty actually made their marks on the parchment. The book makes a significant contribution to the historical literature on Ontario treaties and recently won the Fred Landon Award honouring the best book on regional history by the Ontario Historical Society. The book contains extensive source notes, bibliography, an index, photographs and maps. Highly recommended.
