Paddling Her Own Canoe - The Times and Texts of E. Pauline Johnson Tekahionwake is the recent publication by two academics. Veronica Strong-Boag and Carole Gerson review the career and literary accomplishments of Mohawk / English performer Emily Pauline Johnson (1861-1913). This scholarly study examines Pauline Johnson's complex roles as a sometime champion of Native causes, New Woman, writer and performer, and Canadian nationalist. Examining the published and unpublished works by Johnson, the authors probe the meaning of her career and address her social, racial, and cultural position. Using current feminist and postcolonial perspectives, the authors situate Pauline Johnson's contribution to Canadian literary history. Included in the text is a chronological list of Johnson's writings and a substantial bibliography. The authors hope to reclaim Pauline Johnson's writings and contribution to Canadian society.
