Description

Uumajut Learn About Arctic Wildlife published by Inhabit Media in partnership with Qikiqtani Inuit Association and the Nunavut Bilingual Education Society is written by Nunavut resident Simon Awa, along with Anna Ziegler and Stephanie McDonald. This 30-page bilingual book (English and Inuktitut syllabics) explores the various animals of the tundra and the sea and ice regions of the Arctic. A brief introduction provides additional background for the teacher and the section about the tundra features information about the lemming, caribou, Arctic fox, and the wolverine. Animals of the sea and ice include the amphipods, Arctic char, bearded seal, Beluga whale, and the Bowhead whale. For example the section about the amphipods focuses on the tiny shrimp-like creatures that live in the sea under the pack ice and scavenge for food such as dead animals in the water. The two-page spread features a colour illustration by artist Romi Caron and a brief text in English and syllabics. Inuktitut translation is provided by Leah Otak. Each creature is depicted within its habitat and the detailed illustrations provide a clear understanding of each animal that is important to the Inuit people. Recommended.
