Description

Teacher's Guide for the Series Tales from Big Spirit is designed to help classroom teachers use the graphic novel series, Tales From Big Spirit, by David Alexander Robertson. The guide provides detailed lessons that meet a wide range of language arts and social studies goals, integrate Indigenous perspectives, and make curricular content more accessible to diverse learners. It is organized into three sections. Thr Guide supports the graphic novels: The Ballad of Nancy April Shawnadithit; The Chief: Mistahimaskwa (Big Bear);  The Land of Os: John Ramsay; The Peacemaker: Thanadelthur; The Poet: Pauline Johnson; The Rebel: Gabriel Dumont;  The 69-page guide implements the historical inquiry process with the First Nations and Métis biographical content. The guide also provides information about aspects of graphic novels and how to use them in the classroom. The appendix includes strategies and reproducible classroom materials that support and stimulate student learning such as the Medicine Wheel character map demonstrating the stages of life; and a Seven Teachings (Seven Grandfather) response chart. Author Katya Ferguson is a dedicated early-years educator and a graduate student in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning. She is studying toward her Masters of Education at the University of Manitoba. Her special research interests include teacher development, multi-modal literacies, English as an Additional Language, and Indigenous education. She works as a literacy and numeracy support teacher in the heart of Winnipeg’s inner city. A highly recommended graphic series and teacher's guide.
