Description

No Borders: Kigliqangittuq is the 2013 title in Fifth House Publishing's The Land Is Our Storybook series. This popular series is designed to highlight one of the official Aboriginal language groups in the Northwest Territories.  The book presents information about the people and communities of Kugluktuk, Nunavut and Ulukhaktok, NWT. Although recently divided by the border between the two territories the communities share a common ancestry and their language called Inuinnaqtun. In this 34-page photo essay information book readers meet 16-year old Darla Evyagotailak and her extended family. With the recent creation of Nunavut, two Inuit communities are artificially divided on maps. Darla enjoys soccer, square dancing and her favourite subject in school is drafting. Raised by her maternal grandparents with lots of time spent with her great-grandparents, Darla has had the opportunity to be connected with the strength of her ancestors. In No Borders, Darla accompanies her grandmother and great grandparents on a journey which crosses the border between the community of her birth and the lands of her ancestors. Throughout the book are colour photographs of Darla and her family showing the community interaction and traditional activities on the land. These respectful images were taken by Tessa Macintosh. The part biography and information book shows that Inuit of the North can live successful lives engaged in traditional activities while maintaining the environment for future generations.  Highly recommended.
